sum of days ii

we went to the moma to preview the deKooning retrospective.  after perusing the gallery (which was fantastic btw), we were surprised to see a large installation occupying the entirety of the void composing the main moma gallery, several stories high.  the installation entitled, sum of days, is constituted through large sheets of billowing translucent fabric suspended from the ceiling interspersed with dangling speakers.  a series of microphones in the center of the spiralled sheets records ambient sounds from the day which the speakers then play back, layered with diminshed recordings of the previous day and further diminished echoes from the preceeding day.

the effect was ephemeral and otherworldly.  kudo’s to brazilian artist Carlito Carvalhosa.
